Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) launched a new partnership with the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) to bring mobile, preventive health screenings directly to AHC communities, removing a longstanding barrier for residents who struggle to access routine medical care.
“Many of our residents face significant transportation barriers that make it difficult to attend appointments with their primary care providers, often resulting in delayed or canceled care. Bringing the Mobile Van directly to our communities creates an important opportunity for residents to discuss their healthcare needs, receive referrals, and connect with additional services.”
– Michelle Kells, AHC Program Manager of Health
The UMMC Mobile Health Van visited two AHC communities in Baltimore, MonteVerde Apartments (home to seniors and non-elderly residents with disabilities) and Madera Apartments, offering blood pressure, body mass index, and A1C screenings. UMMC staff also referred residents to UMMC’s Diabetes Prevention Program, Community Health Education Center, and a free blood pressure monitoring program.
“The impact of our mobile health van goes beyond screenings,” said Mariellen Arisman, UMMC Manager for Community Health Improvement. “It provides a welcoming space where community members can learn about their health, receive preventative screenings, ask questions, and connect with valuable healthcare resources.”
Combined, the two visits served 28 residents. The van will visit two other AHC Baltimore communities in June and July, Union Rowe and Greenspring Overlook.
Michelle said residents were happy to receive this care right at their doorsteps and are excited to attend future visits. The mobile van partnership reflects AHC’s ongoing commitment to meeting residents where they are. The van will return to the communities in three months.
