Diverse, integrated communities are resilient communities. Everyone benefits when communities include a mix of incomes, a balance of uses, and a variety of life experiences.

Residents are the experts of their own lives, know their strengths best, and are best positioned to determine what they need to live the lives they want to live.

Residents are strong and hold power – they want to be heard and included in all stages and phases of our work to ensure that it is successful and impactful.

Affordable housing is critical economic and social infrastructure. It is a platform for economic mobility, transformation, and human development.

Housing is a basic human right and stable housing is the foundation of a good life. Safe and affordable housing helps our residents stabilize and thrive.

Poverty is not a choice nor a reflection of a person’s character or intelligence.

Our History

Founded in 1975 by Arlington residents and county leaders, AHC began as a local response to rising housing costs. As demand grew across the mid-Atlantic, so did our impact — expanding access, evolving solutions, and building stronger communities. Today, we continue our mission, ensuring more families have a place to call home.
