Affordable Homes & Communities (AHC) recently secured $1,175,000 in federal funding for its innovative redevelopment project with Goodwill of Greater Washington.
“This federal investment is a gamechanger for this project and for the families who will call it home. With the support of Senators Warner and Kaine, we are one step closer to delivering not just affordable homes, but a community where families have access to childcare and the wraparound services they need to thrive.”
– Paul Bernard, AHC President & CEO
The funding, secured by U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, will support the creation of a groundbreaking facility at 10 South Glebe Road combining 128 units of affordable housing with a modernized Goodwill retail store and donation center, plus an onsite affordable childcare facility.
“As a former fair housing attorney, I’ve seen the difference safe and reliable housing can make,” Senator Kaine said. “That’s why I’m glad to have secured funding to develop affordable rental homes for families in Arlington, as well as support for essential wraparound services like childcare, a community center, a playground, and trails. I’ll keep working to improve housing accessibility in Virginia and across the country.”
The new community will serve families earning between 30% and 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The project will also create approximately 30 new jobs. Construction is expected to start in spring 2026.
“I hear from families and local leaders all the time that are struggling with the rising cost and shrinking supply of affordable housing. In Virginia alone, we’re facing a shortfall of nearly 188,000 housing units, and this gap could grow to more than 200,000 units if we don’t act,” Senator Warner said. “I’m proud to work with AHC to bring affordable housing options to Virginia, and to award them federal funding to create rental homes for low-income families in Arlington.”
